Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security protocol which requires another device in addition to your email and password to verify your identity. You may have had previous experiences with MFA on your personal email accounts like Gmail or with online banking.

Starting November 2024, Capella University will require MFA on all accounts for access to most of our online sites, including Campus, the Canvas courseroom and related online resources.

How to register and update your device

Setting up MFA for your account requires a setup step with an additional device. This is commonly a mobile phone, but other options are available.

Registering your device

You only need to complete this initial set up once. You can change your devices or authentication method later if needed.

  1. Log in to PingOne for Capella University: Go to the PingOne My Account Link and enter your username and password.
  2. Begin registration: Follow prompts on screen to start the registration process.
  3. Choose your preferred authentication method: Available options include, SMS text, voice call or authenticator app (mobile or desktop).
  4. Verify Your Method: Follow the prompts to verify your chosen method. This may involve entering a code sent to your phone.
  5. Complete Registration: Once verified, your device is registered for MFA.
  6. Register a second device: Repeat the process to register a secondary device to avoid account lock-out.

Review the detailed MFA Registration Guide for additional information.

Logging in with MFA

Once you have set up MFA on your account, logging in will require an additional step to authenticate. After submitting your username and password, our system will send you a one-time code to complete your login. You will enter the code in the provided field, then can proceed to the desired site.

Updating your device

If you get a new phone, or otherwise need to change a connected device, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to PingOne for Capella University: Log in to your account.
  2. Manage MFA Devices: Find the option to manage your MFA under the Authentication page. From here you can update your default device and add or remove a device.

Best Practices

  • Set up multiple devices with MFA so you don’t get locked out because of access problems with a device.
  • Make sure you are familiar with how to use a secondary method for authentication if needed.
  • If your device changes, make sure to remove and update your default and methods for verification.
  • Always be wary of phishing attempts. MFA can help protect your account access, but it’s important to stay vigilant.
  • Authenticator applications like PingID use encrypted communications and provide the most secure MFA method.
